But Yves is the only one of us to have lived there, so for now we shall keep Lahti and Pori in the 'arseholes of Finland' camp (Jussi didn't raise any objections to my descriptions of his hometown, either).eganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03907795141239035180noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7506926662304536535.post-43131795354360940882007-09-27T00:44:00.000+03:002007-09-27T00:44:00.000+03:00I kind of remember someone (Jussi?) telling me the...I kind of remember someone (Jussi?) telling me the same anecdote about Pori. Both versions may well be true - and giving Tampere two beacons of Finnish academia really doesn't sound like Kekkonen, whose masterplan was to scatter our colleges all across the country. (In Tampere, the original plan was to locate also UTA in Hervanta - a damn shame they didn't stick to it.)

I've always liked Lahti. There's a Teerenpeli with a whisky distillery and sahti on draught, and also Torvi Baari - an intended, Bohemian kind of shithole, one of my favourite bars in whole Finland. Possibly the most bizarre one of all my drinking stories starts from Torvi Baari...yet let me balance things a bit and tell it on FiF.Aapohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16238268282575859166noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7506926662304536535.post-47983950222835470922007-09-26T18:26:00.000+03:002007-09-26T18:26:00.000+03:00Aye aye, I know. Maybe best just to delete that bit.

There must be plenty of other ways to diss Lahti though, how about the story regarding TUT I recounted on the football site? Is that verifiable enough to include here?eganhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03907795141239035180noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7506926662304536535.post-54741080056863708662007-09-26T15:24:00.000+03:002007-09-26T15:24:00.000+03:00Myself I hate myths, and especially myths about se...Myself I hate myths, and especially myths about serious issues, so this is one myth that really deserves to be bashed. So there you go: http://tinyurl.com/34j3w4

Incidentally, countries with high suicide rates seem to very little in common - except for one thing. For some reason people who live in islands are more prone to kill themselves than those who aren't surrounded by water. Take a look yourself: http://tinyurl.com/ytvygu

Another denominator might be social transition. For instance in Finland the suicide rate tripled when the country urbanised rapidly, and then there are a plenty of post-socialist countries who have witnessed their figures rising since the curtain came down. (Or have they? Maybe the pre-1991 figures just weren't reliable.)

So, what else do you want to know?Unknownhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11884131824132881965noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7506926662304536535.post-23942926700145662912007-09-25T23:01:00.000+03:002007-09-25T23:01:00.000+03:00Damn, sorry if I got my facts wrong, I have heard ...Damn, sorry if I got my facts wrong, I have heard on Quebec radio last week that if the Province of Québec would be a country, its suicide rate would rate third in the world after Finland and Japan, in no particular order. Maybe the land of Hara-Kiri has surpassed you guys but the latest info I got, you were sitting comfortably in the top two. This was a very reliable source, but they can of course be wrong, and it might also have been a statistic among industrialized countries, or countries that know how to lace skates, I am not sure. My apologies if I blew this one out of proportion.yvresgyroshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05820236792368022526noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7506926662304536535.post-2150822286208823252007-09-24T19:53:00.000+03:002007-09-24T19:53:00.000+03:00Maybe you should look at world suicide rates again...Maybe you should look at world suicide rates again.
